Prolonged drought has caused the water level in Lake Koronia to drop significantly.
It should be noted that in combination with prolonged sunlight, ideal conditions were created for phytoplankton hypertrophy, which creates suffocating conditions for fish.
According to the Director General of the Organization for the Natural Environment and Climate Change (OFYPECA), Eleni Koumoutsou (spoke to voria.gr) “from our experience we estimate that the depth of the lake water at its deepest point is considerably less than one meter. This fact is confirmed by the observation of flamingos that are able to walk and search for food in the deepest parts of the lake.”
And this is the only consolation in the image of Lake Koroneia. On the one hand, the water level is constantly decreasing, and on the other hand, thousands of flamingos dancing on the water have appeared on its shores.
