During the European Mobility Week (European Mobility Week), together with more than 2,000 municipalities from 44 European countries, the Municipality of Athensthrough the This is Athens – City Festival, with the action “ATHENS without a car”, which takes place on the 21st and 22nd of September on the street with the same name.
The European Mobility Week (16-22/9) highlights the need for sustainable urban mobility. With the theme “Shared Public Space”, this year it calls on municipalities to take decisions to enhance public space and improve citizens’ quality of life.
The week culminates with World Car Free Day (22/9), when city residents and visitors are encouraged to use public transport, their bicycles and rollerblades and come downtown.
More than 20 educational and cultural activities for all ages will take place from 8pm on Saturday (21/9) to 8pm on Sunday (22/9) on Athena Street (from Ermou to Euripides). Traffic regulations
For the convenience of all visitors, the following traffic rules will apply:
1. Suspension of vehicle circulation and prohibition of stopping and parking vehicles, from Saturday 21/9 at 8:00 pm to Sunday 22/9 at 10:00 pm, on the following streets:
- Athens, in the section between Evripidou and Ermou streets and both traffic flows and their perpendiculars up to the first parallel
- Kar. Serbia, in all its extension
- Pericles, in all its extension
- Athenaides, along its entire length
- Holy. Peace, in all its extension
- Praça São Incorporeo, in the section between Sarri and Ermou streets, in the flow of traffic towards Ermou
- Ermou, on the stretch between St. Asomatos and Athenas, in the traffic flow towards Athenas Street
The time limit of this traffic regulation may be extended or reduced beyond the specified time, as well as not be applied, if traffic conditions so require, at the discretion of the head of traffic measures at YT Athens.
Measure
At the same time, the opening hours of Metro lines 1, 2 and 3 are extended until 2:30 am on Sunday mornings, to make things easier for those who will be attending events on Saturday night.
Bus
For the same reason, the bus route is modified, from 21/9 at 8:00 pm to 23/9 at 5:00 am, as follows:
- 227: Towards Ag. Artemio: From Piraeus, continue straight to Piraeus, Omonia square, continue normally. Towards Petralona: From Sokratous, straight to Piraeus, continue normally.
- 025, 026: From Hippokratos: From Homer, right to Panepistimiou, Omonia square, left to Sokratos, right to Piraeus, right to Milleros, continue as normal. To Hippocrates: From Thermopylae, left to Piraeus, Omonoia square, Stadiou, continue as normal.
- 035: To Tavros: From Sokratos, direct to Piraeus, continue as normal. To Kypseli: From Piraeus, continue direct to Piraeus, Omonia square, continue as normal.
- 400: To S. Duke Placentias: From Piraeus, go straight to Piraeus, Omonia square, continue normally. To Piraeus: From Sokratous, straight to Piraeus, continue normally.
- 500: To Kifissia: From Piraeus, continue straight to Piraeus, Omonia square, continue normally. To Piraeus: From Sokratous, straight to Piraeus, continue normally.
Throughout the night, the following bus lines will operate:
- 11 (Patisia Year – S. Pagrati – S. Switzerland)
- 040 (Piraeus – Syntagma)
- 400 (Piraeus – St. Duk. Placentia)
- 500 (Piraeus – Kifissia)
- 790 (Glyfada – Peristeri (Anthoupoli)
- X14 (Constitution).

The Municipality of Athens stresses that it invests in improving accessibility in the city and encourages the use of sustainable means of transport.
In addition, it is moving forward with a series of measures such as reducing speed in areas close to schools, creating light traffic lanes, providing parking spaces for bicycles and installing useful tools for people with reduced mobility.
Measures to create greenways, install electric vehicle charging points and widen sidewalks and wheelchair ramps are also in the process of being implemented.
