Here’s What Indiana Uber Driver Confessed He Did to Chanti Dixon
Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Chief Chris Bailey shared that Chanti Dixon called for an Uber around 3:34 a.m. on Sunday, September 8. by ABC News. The 30-year-old woman was heading home from work, but the distance of the trip between the two locations remains unclear. It was noted that she made a stop before her final stop near her home address.
Authorities recovered Dixon’s body — naked, unconscious and face down — after her family tracked her location to the wooded area near her home and called 911. Upon investigation, they discovered a gunshot wound to the left side of her head, according to ABC. Police also found two phones belonging to Dixon near her body. Dixon’s mother provided police with the passcodes to both of her phones, according to Fox59. The mother was at the scene when police pronounced Chanti Dixon dead.
Within hours, the investigation led them to 29-year-old Francisco Valdez. According to the arrest affidavit, Valdez first told officers that an armed black man approached his car, tried to rob Chanti, and shot him in the thigh. He claimed he got out and cleaned the blood off his vehicle. He reportedly told two additional conflicting stories before confessing to the murder and attempted rape.
Valdez allegedly admitted to sexually assaulting Dixon in the backseat near her home. He also claimed that Dixon insulted his body during the rape, which prompted him to fatally shoot her, according to Fox59. After killing her, Valdez said he dragged her body out of the car and placed it behind a concrete barrier. He also allegedly attempted to have sex with her lifeless body.
Uber and IMPD talk about Francisco Valdez
Following the arrest of the Uber driver, the company released a statement addressing Chanti Dixon’s death. “Our hearts break for Ms. Dixon’s family and loved ones. The details of this act of violence are horrific, and we will assist the Indianapolis Police Department in any way we can as they continue their investigation,” he said.
Additionally, Police Chief Chris Bailey and Assistant Chief Catherine Cummings assured Indianapolis ride-sharing users that Uber remains a “safe” travel option. Bailey called Dixon’s death “an unnecessary act of evil,” while Cummings defended women and girls’ right to safety.
“Women, girls, mothers have the right to exist freely in our community without fear of something heinous happening to them. They have the right to walk, ride, carpool, rideshare without fear of something bad happening to them. This is a family’s worst nightmare, and we extend our sincere condolences to her family during this difficult time.”
Fox59 reports that Valdez has been preliminarily charged with first-degree murder. IMPD officials have reportedly said that Valdez could face additional charges. Meanwhile, ABC News says his next court appearance will take place on Thursday (September 12).
