After three days of release, “Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire” is the third highest-grossing film of the year. It grossed a mighty $194 million globally in its opening weekend, behind only “Dune: Part Two” ($626 million after five weeks of release) and “Kung Fu Panda 4” ($347 million after four weeks of release) in terms of overall gross ticket sales.
The monster mashup, from Warner Bros. and Legendary Entertainment, opened at the global box office with $114 million from 64 markets. Furthermore, it far exceeded expectations in North America, with US$80 million in its first weekend of release. Abroad, China led with US$44 million, followed by Mexico with US$12.8 million and India with US$5.5 million.
“We wanted to deliver something that was extremely fun for the audience,” says “Godzilla x Kong” producer Mary, Mom or Dad. “No one has a crystal ball. You can only hope and dream. So to see this result globally is really good and exciting.”
The “Godzilla vs. Kong”, Adam Wingard, returned to direct “The New Empire”, starring Rebecca Corridor, Brian Tyree Henry and Dan Stevens. Unlike previous iterations, which pit the creatures against each other, this film sees Kong teaming up with Godzilla to stop a mysterious threat from destroying the planet. It has a production budget of $135 million, so big international ticket sales would be essential to justify its high price tag. With that momentum, though, “The New Empire” is poised to finally surpass its predecessor, “Godzilla vs. Kong” in 2021. The previous edition became a pandemic-era success, with US$474 million worldwide, managing to surpass the revenue of “King of the Monsters” in 2019 (US$387 million), at a time when that many movie theaters were closed because of COVID.
Another pillar of support for Warner Bros. and Legendary’s “Dune: Part Two” strengthened its position as the year’s biggest film with $626.1 million globally. Over the weekend, director Denis Villeneuve’s sci-fi epic grossed $18.4 million from 73 global markets, bringing its worldwide total to $373.7 million. Outside of North America ($252 million), the largest territories are China ($46.5 million), the United Kingdom ($43 million), Germany ($34.3 million) and France ($34.2 million).
Elsewhere, “Oppenheimer” opened in its final market over the weekend, more than eight months after its initial release. Christopher Nolan’s Oscar-winning historical epic debuted in Japan with $2.5 million, placing third in the country after two local films, the horror title “Uncommon House” and the animated film “Haikyu!!” With these ticket sales, “Oppenheimer” reaches an impressive $965 million worldwide.
