During Sunday’s episode, Nicole said Mahmoud refused to talk about his problems, insisted he wanted a divorce and stormed out. She decided to go after him because she was worried about his safety late at night and that he left his phone and credit card that she gave him.
“I don’t know where he thinks he’s going,” she told the cameras. “And at this point, I don’t think he has any intention of coming back. He’s still my husband and I’m responsible for him. I know that if the tables were turned and I had stormed out and was in Cairo, he would be searching the streets looking for me.”
As dramatic music played, Nicole finally found Mahmoud walking with his suitcase and told him to get in the car. The two continued to argue, with Mahmoud refusing to accompany her as she repeatedly told him to get in the car. Mahmoud finally agreed and told the cameras that he was confused because she tried to kick him out and now she was trying to find him.
“She just showed me that she still cares about me and I’m very surprised by that,” he said. ‘If I stay, I’ll be hurt, I’ll be sad, but of course I still love her. That’s why I want to give myself time and think clearly.
Meanwhile, in the parking lot of his apartment, Nicole asked him why he always runs away and said that he needed to tell him exactly what he wanted. At this moment, he started to cry.
“The last few days I felt like I was really tired and hurt,” he told the cameras. “Nicole acts like such a different person here in America, but she’s still there for me and I’m still there for her.
As for Nicole, she said his breakdown was actually a positive development.
“When Mahmoud starts to break down, I feel like he is being more honest about his feelings for the first time since he got here,” she told the cameras. “And I feel like I can really reach him on an emotional level right now. And I feel like those tears suggest that he is capable of changing and moving forward.”
“You know, I still care about him and I’m not ready to let him go or say goodbye,” she added.
Mahmoud agreed to stay at Nicole’s apartment, but Nicole said he wasn’t sleeping in her bed and arranged for him to have his own space in her living room. She also told him that he couldn’t stop her from being American and that she needed to learn how to be Muslim in the United States.
“Just because you don’t participate doesn’t mean it doesn’t exist,” she told him about things like drinking alcohol.
Mahmoud told the cameras that when Nicole was in Egypt, she always felt like he was controlling her and doing something bad to her, so he felt like she was trying to show that she had the power now. He told Nicole that he now felt no love or respect from her. Nicole said she would give him time to figure out what he wanted to do with his life, whether it was to stay with her or go back to Egypt. He thanked her for giving him a place to stay.
“I won’t try to bother you while you’re here,” he said.
Mahmoud said he needed time to think and even if he didn’t break up with Nicole, he still cared about her.
“It represents, like, four years of my life,” he said. “I still love Nicole. I don’t want to make quick decisions when I’m angry because if I leave, I’ll never come back.”
