Yamaha R1 and R1M 2025 get more features and updated hardware
Yamaha has officially revealed the 2025 YZF-R1 and YZF-R1M for international markets, bringing a host of visual and mechanical updates to its iconic superbikes. Both models have received upgrades aimed at improving aerodynamics, handling and braking performance, while retaining their aggressive design language.
Design and Aerodynamics
In terms of aesthetics, the 2025 Yamaha YZF-R1 and R1M retain their aggressive and striking appearance, but now feature new carbon fiber winglets. These winglets, inspired by Yamaha’s YZR-M1 MotoGP race bike, add a significant touch of racing heritage to the design. In addition to their visual appeal, the winglets play an important role in providing aerodynamic downforce, especially during cornering and hard acceleration, improving stability and performance.
Suspension and Handling
The standard YZF-R1 receives an update in the form of a revised KYB front fork, which promises improved road feedback and increased chassis stability. Suspension remains fully adjustable, allowing riders to tailor the setup to their preferences. The higher-spec YZF-R1M, meanwhile, continues to come equipped with premium Ohlins suspension, which is widely praised for its precision and performance in dynamic riding conditions.
Braking performance
One of the most anticipated updates for the 2025 models is in the braking department. Yamaha has introduced Brembo Stylema calipers paired with a Brembo master cylinder, a setup that promises to significantly improve braking bite and feel. This addresses feedback from current R1 owners who have been asking for increased stopping power.
Engine and Electronics
Both the YZF-R1 and R1M are powered by a 998cc inline four-cylinder engine with a crossplane crankshaft, producing an impressive 200 BHP and 113 Nm of torque. The engine is paired with a six-speed gearbox, offering an exhilarating and responsive riding experience.
In terms of electronics, Yamaha continues to equip the R1 and R1M with a suite of advanced rider aids. These include IMU-assisted cornering ABS, traction control, wheelie control and multiple riding modes, ensuring the bikes are as safe as they are fast.
Market availability
One crucial detail for international buyers is that the 2025 YZF-R1 and R1M do not meet Euro 5 emissions standards, meaning they are sold as track-only motorcycles in European markets. However, in the United States, where emissions regulations are less stringent, both models remain street-legal.
For the Indian market, these motorcycles currently do not meet the stringent BS6.2 emission norms. Despite this, Yamaha may consider offering the YZF-R1 as a track-only motorcycle in India, providing enthusiasts with an opportunity to experience the legendary superbike in a controlled environment.
The 2025 Yamaha YZF-R1 and YZF-R1M continue to push the boundaries of superbike performance with cutting-edge technology and design. The addition of MotoGP-inspired aerodynamics, improved suspension and updated brakes make these models even more appealing to track-focused riders. While European customers will have to enjoy these bikes on the racetrack, enthusiasts in other markets, such as the U.S., will be able to experience them on the road.
