“Those who attempt to commit fraud at the expense of EOPYY and its policyholders will be brought to justice,” the Organization stresses, following the arrests of 16 members of two fake prescription networks, which caused it losses of more than 3.5 million euros.
According to EOPYY, after an in-depth investigation by its competent Services, two complete files with evidence of systemic fraud by doctors and pharmacists at EOPYY’s expense were sent to the Economic Police for investigation in October 2023, based on which the EOPYY Police, after and from its own investigation with its own means, resulted in the arrest of doctors, pharmacists and others involved in these two criminal organizations.
Virtual Prescription Circuits Dismantled: EOPYY Damages Top 3.5 Million, 16 Arrests
The Organization emphasizes that its experienced doctors and pharmacists have combined the specific checks that have been systematically carried out over the past twelve months by the competent EOPYY services for compliance with the compensation restrictions on iron, vitamin and magnesium drugs with the updated prescription limit checks at the beginning of 2024 (ceiling) with complaints from insured persons for inadvertently prescribing and carrying out in their AMKA preparations, including the legislation on drugs.
After cross-referencing the EOPYY and Health Insurance File information systems, in addition to prescriptions outside the indications and overdoses of preparations from specific companies, similarities in diagnoses, pharmaceutical preparations, active substances and dosages were observed, as well as high percentages in the monitoring of medical prescriptions regarding the number and value of prescriptions in specific pharmacies.
“The high level of non-compliance by doctors identified by the competent services of EOPYY led EOPYY to attribute the damages identified to the prescribing doctors and to impose the prescribed sanctions, and EOPYY must take legal action to safeguard its interests”, the Organization emphasizes.
