Ather to introduce two new platforms for future e-scooters and e-bikes
Ather Energy is actively developing two new platforms to further expand its product line. The upcoming platforms, called EL and Zenith, represent the company’s foray into electric scooters and motorcycles, catering to different market segments.
EL Platform
The EL platform is currently in an advanced stage of development and is set to underpin Ather’s future electric scooters. This new platform is expected to offer a more affordable and versatile option for consumers, allowing Ather to reach a wider audience. The EL platform will integrate advancements in powertrain, chassis and electronics, while leveraging some of the technologies from Ather’s current 450 platform, particularly the battery system and Atherstack operating system.
Additionally, Ather has filed design patents for a potential maxi-scooter, signaling that the EL platform could extend beyond conventional scooter formats. If realized, this maxi-scooter could add a new dimension to Ather’s product lineup, appealing to customers seeking more substantial, feature-rich two-wheelers.
Zenith Platform
While Ather has made its name in the electric scooter market, it is now gearing up to enter the competitive electric motorcycle space with its Zenith platform. Targeting the 125cc to 300cc market, Ather’s first electric motorcycle is expected to compete with both traditional combustion engine bikes and emerging electric models in this category.
Ather CEO Tarun Mehta has previously hinted at the company’s interest in motorcycles up to 200cc, but recent developments suggest an expansion to cater to a more competitive segment, possibly up to 300cc. Such a move would position Ather as a serious contender in the electric motorcycle market, particularly as the industry sees increasing consumer interest and competition.
Focus on lithium-iron-phosphate battery technology
Alongside these developments, Ather is also working on a new Lithium-Iron-Phosphate (LFP) battery platform. This new chemistry is expected to be more affordable compared to nickel-based alternatives, helping Ather reduce production costs and potentially offering lower-priced models to customers.
The LFP batteries are also expected to be compatible with some of Ather’s existing models, allowing the company to upgrade current offerings and take advantage of this new technology.
The way forward for Ather
With the launch of these platforms, Ather is positioning itself for further growth in the evolving electric vehicle landscape. The EL platform could make its electric scooters more accessible to a wider audience, while the Zenith platform marks the company’s serious entry into the electric motorcycle market. Coupled with advancements in battery technology, Ather’s upcoming offerings are set to play a significant role in shaping the future of electric mobility in India.
As the electric vehicle sector continues to grow, Ather’s expansion into these new product categories will be closely watched by industry experts and consumers alike.
