Dedicated KTM Big Bike Showrooms to sell 400cc and above motorcycles
KTM is set to re-enter the major motorcycle market in India, marking a significant shift in its strategy by establishing dedicated dealer networks exclusively for its larger capacity motorcycles. This initiative follows a hiatus in the large bike segment in India and represents a focused approach to offering a premium experience to its customers.
KTM plans to sell its 400cc and above motorcycles initially in exclusive showrooms, targeting select metropolitan cities. This change aims to improve the purchasing experience for premium customers, distinguishing it from the sales and service experience of locally manufactured KTM models. Existing KTM showrooms will undergo upgrades to accommodate this new lineup, and in the future, some of these dealers may also have the opportunity to sell these cutting-edge models at retail.
Although KTM has not officially confirmed which models will be available, the 890 Adventure and 990 Duke are likely candidates for the Indian market. The possibility of introducing the top-of-the-line 1390 Super Duke R was also mentioned, although its price is expected to exceed Rs. 20 lakhs (ex-showroom), may limit its market appeal. The 790 Duke, previously sold in India, is now produced by KTM’s Chinese partner, CFMoto, and has seen a power reduction for the European market. Given its past performance and market reception, it is unlikely to return to India.
This strategic move by KTM could pave the way for Husqvarna’s bigger bikes to enter the Indian market. Husqvarna, which shares a close relationship with KTM, currently sells its small capacity bikes alongside KTM models in India. The potential introduction of larger Husqvarna models such as the Svartpilen 801 and Norden 901 could diversify and strengthen the premium motorcycle segment in India.
In 2020, KTM sold 100 units of the BS4 790 Duke in India. Despite the higher price, the bike was sold and serviced by existing KTM dealers, which reportedly diluted the premium experience that KTM aims to offer. Learning from this, KTM’s new strategy with dedicated showrooms seeks to offer a more refined and exclusive customer experience, aligning with the expectations of high-end motorcycle buyers.
The Austrian bicycle manufacturer’s re-entry into the Indian large motorcycle market with a structured premium dealer network underlines its commitment to meet the growing demand for large displacement motorcycles in the country. This strategic move could potentially set a new benchmark for motorcycle retail in India, increasing the brand’s presence and appeal among enthusiasts.
