The Deputy Prime Minister expressed his conviction that the Prime Minister of Slovakia, Robert Fico, will survive despite multiple gunshot wounds.
The Slovak prime minister was greeting supporters at an event when the assassination attempt occurred, shocking the small country and the whole of Europe weeks before the elections.
“I think in the end he will survive,” Thomas Taraba told the BBC, adding: “He is not in a life-threatening situation at the moment.”
Doctors fought for hours for his life
Doctors fought for Fico’s life several hours after he was shot, Defense Minister Robert Kalina told reporters at the hospital where Fico was being treated.
Five shootings occurred outside a cultural center in the city of Hadlova, nearly 140 kilometers (85 miles) northeast of the capital, government officials said. The town of 16,000 was once a coal mining center.
