John put all his emotions into one open letter for The Hollywood Reporterco-editor-in-chief, who conducted the interview with Andy – and in it, he says: “To suggest that people doubt a friendship like mine and Andy’s is to undermine the public’s ability to accept and understand diversity in all the facets of culture, whether in art or in real life.”
ICYMI… THR told Andy that fans are “doubtful” about his friendship with Mayer — in other words, people think they’re hooking up. Andy responded, “Honestly, I love John Mayer and he loves me. But because we’re so affectionate with each other, people don’t know which box to put that in.” He also categorically denied that they are sleeping together.

Anyway, John’s question is why the question was raised. As he says: “I’d like to think that (the public is) sophisticated enough to view a relationship like ours without assuming that it must include a sexual component. This turns the concept of being gay into an ignorantly two-dimensional concept, which I know that you know it isn’t.”
On a more humorous note, the guitarist also says there is a “long and storied history” of rockers befriending gay artists/icons – although he didn’t offer any examples.
John signed the letter by adding: “Simply put, if anyone doubts a platonic relationship between a straight man and a gay man, I don’t think that superficial view deserves clarification by any self-respecting person, be it Andy or his publication.”
