It’s been eight years and counting since the last Star Trek film premiered in theaters in 2016 Star Trek Beyond. While Star Trek is releasing tons of TV shows on Paramount+, it’s still unclear when we might see Walk back to the cinemas.
A new article in Variety about the state of Star Trek indicates, however, that the film project that is most advanced in development at Paramount Pictures at the moment would be “a kind of origin story for the main timeline of the entire franchise”. This project is being written by Seth Grahame-Smith and would be directed by Andor It is black mirrorIt’s Toby Haynes.
They cite unnamed sources who claim the film is “on track to begin pre-production by the end of the year.”

The same report notes that this project is “further along” than the much-discussed fourth film in the “Kelvin” series. Star Trek series, the reboot/legacy film series with Chris Pine as Captain Kirk, Zachary Quinto as Mr. Spock and Zoe Saldana as Lieutenant Uhura. Paramount has announced and/or developed numerous sequels to this Star Trek crew since the launch of Star Trek Beyond – including a time travel story that would see Kirk going to the past to have an adventure with his father, played by Chris Hemsworth.
This movie never happened, nor did any of the others. Star Trek film projects over the past eight years, including one that Quentin Tarantino worked on for a while. So I wouldn’t blame you if you believe we’ll never see this “origin story” movie. As for what could be the origin from within Star Trek … I’m not sure. The early days of warp technology were featured in the film Star Trek: First Contact. Maybe something about the founding of the Federation?
