ET’s Nischelle Turner spoke with royal expert Katie Nicholl outside Buckingham Palace in London on Thursday, and she shared how much information the Duke and Duchess of Sussex know about the Princess of Wales amidst everyone conspiracy theories.
“I know there were reports, particularly in the United States, that Meghan had contacted Kate and that there had been some kind of thaw in the relationship,” Nicholl told ET. “I think these reports are a little off.”
According to Nicholl, the amount of information that Harry and Meghan know is scarce, as they are no longer royals – so are Harry and William continue to have a tense relationship.
“Of course they know she’s been in (hospital), I’m not even sure they know what she’s been doing because the relationship is so far apart now, you know, the brothers don’t talk to each other and Kate and Meghan certainly don’t talk, so , although well wishes have been extended – certainly from the Sussexes – I’m not sure they are really as informed as perhaps more senior members of the royal family,” Nicholl says.
“I’m sure flowers and well wishes were sent,” she adds of Harry and Meghan’s private gestures. “And Meghan is known for writing those beautiful handwritten letters, but I think the idea of them being brought back to the inner sanctum of Wales is certainly wrong.”
The Duke and Duchess of Sussex stepped back from their royal duties in 2020 and have since moved to Montecito, California, with their two children, Prince Archie, 4, and Princess Lilibet, 2. Their latest trip Harry went to the UK in February, after his father King Charles III’s cancer diagnosis.
While Harry’s visit was a testament to a long olive branch between father and son and their fractured relationship, Nicholl says there is no chance that Kate’s surgery and recovery will do the same to repair Harry’s fractured relationship and William.
“There is a huge breach of trust between the two brothers,” she says. “William worries about anything he says that might be filtered through Harry or Megan or his aides. I believe they’ve certainly been in touch, but is there this idea of, you know, they’re welcome back to Wales in a sanctuary – no. I think if anything is going to bring the brothers back together, it will probably be the king.
Royal watchers and the Internet are watching closely to see if Kate will return to public life during the family’s annual Easter service. While Kate’s return to public life has yet to be determined, Nicholl told ET that after seeing her at the weekend with William at Windsor Farm Shop and the new reports that Kate has been working from home with one of his biggest sponsorshipsthe princess shows every sign that she is ready to return to royal duties.
“These rumors that we’ll possibly see her on Easter Sunday and when the royal family traditionally goes to church on Easter, yes, I think that’s every possibility,” Nicholl told ET. “When you think about that video, you know what struck me was that she was walking at a pretty brisk pace. I think she looked very happy. I mean, she looked very relaxed and she seemed very happy in the company of her husband. They were obviously talking. I think she clearly wasn’t aware that she was being filmed, you know, and you kind of got a glimpse of her without makeup, without her power suit, without her big hair, really, just being a wife and shopping. for the family on Saturday.”
