The masked singer returned on Wednesday and introduced fans to the four new Group C contestants, who battled in costume for a chance at the coveted Golden Mask trophy.
About that, new speaker Rita Ora was joined by stalwart panelists Robin Thicke, Ken Jeong and Jenny McCarthy as they tried their best to uncover the secret identities of the new batch of costumed characters.
On this week’s “Billy Joel Night,” The Clock, The Lizard, the Poodle Moth and Spaghetti & Meatballs did their best to wow the panel with renditions of the iconic artist’s most beloved hits.
The Poodle Moth (who, surprisingly, is based on a real creature that has only been sighted once) was the first performer to take the stage, and she set the bar particularly high with a smooth, deft and joyful version of 1977’s Billy Joel. single “The way you are”.
“That was one of the best vocals I’ve ever heard,” Ora marveled. “It was so graceful and so hypnotic…it was such an unbelievable performance.”
The display of vocal talent continued with a spectacular performance by The Clock. The stunning Broadway-quality singer behind the mask stunned the panel with her rendition of what many consider Joel’s most iconic hit, “Piano Man.”
“Wow! I have a message for everyone else on this show. It’s time to get scared!” McCarthy declared. “Because this queen arrived in The masked singer!”
The next contestant to take the stage left everyone hungry – Spaghetti & Meatballs, a chef-inspired character with a head made of spaghetti with meatball eyes. The surreal costume was made even more disorienting by his surprisingly impressive voice, which he showed off with a cover of “Only the Good Die Young.”
“It was so good! It was giving you all the ingredients, darling,” Ora said. “That was a great performance! You’re a star.”
The last performer of the night – and one of the most energetic and charismatic – was The Lizard, who won over the audience from the first moment he took the stage, and only continued the party with his fun and engaging performance of “Girl from the City high.”
“I just loved it! I don’t know, man. I thought (you were) somebody, now I’m not. Your voice was amazing,” Ora shared, perplexed. “That was really great. It was great.”
After all the songs sung, it was time for the public to vote on who should move on to the next round and who would face each other in the Smackdown Round. When the votes were cast and counted, The Poodle Moth and The Clock emerged victorious.
This meant that The Lizard and Spaghetti & Meatballs would face off, singing lines from Joel’s 1977 hit “Movin’ Out (Anthony’s Song).” Both Spaghetti & Meatballs and The Lizard gave impressive performances, but ultimately it was The Lizard who got the win.
This gave the panel one last chance to guess the identity of Spaghetti & Meatballs – and, as always, no one came close, even though they were in the right neighborhood with a hunch it might be a famous chef.
When Spaghetti & Meatballs was finally unmasked, it was discovered that he was the restaurant owner and Master chef Judge Joe Bastianich!
“Singing has been a passion of mine my entire life, so when I had the opportunity to do it and share it with all of you, I jumped at it,” shared Bastianich. “Thank you to everyone who supported me and my music, and thank you for having me.”
The masked singer airs Wednesdays at 8pm ET/PT on Fox.
