Ferrari was caught testing a prototype of its successor 812 super fast again, and there is evidence that it is almost certainly equipped with a V-12 engine.
The prototype is heavily camouflaged, but the proportions are unmistakable. Some details also appear in the camouflage equipment, such as the hood ventilation openings, the slim headlights and part of the taillight design.
Previous spy photos have shown a test mule using a makeshift body of the Roma coupe to hide the new mechanics. The sound of the test mule in the YouTube channel video Car spy media points to a V-12 under the hood.
The 812 arrived on the scene in 2017 and has its roots in the F12 Berlinetta, which debuted in 2012. Its successor, which is codenamed F167, will be launched in 2024 and will bring with it a new platform and a new engine. Rumors point to a debut in May.
The 812’s successor will likely run on Ferrari’s latest front car platform. The platform, first announced in 2018, supports various wheelbase lengths, engine types and seating configurations. It can also be equipped with all-wheel drive and hybrid technologies.
While a V-12 is almost certain for the 812’s successor, it’s not certain whether there will be some form of electrification.
The engine intended for the 812’s successor is likely the newly developed 6.5-liter V-12 that debuted last year at Purosangue. The engine delivers 715 hp in the SUV, but will likely offer more in the 812 successor. The 812 Superfast’s engine, also a 6.5-liter V-12, had 789 hp. It was dialed up to 819 hp for the hardcore competition variant 812.
V-12 fans can also look forward to a successor to the Aston Martin DBS, which is also expected to debut this year. A prototype for this model was also recently discovered.
