Before Colbert showed the cover to his studio audience and viewers, he shared that CBS asked him not to do so, claiming the community said it was “not a good idea.”
“Now, before I present this cover, I just want you and viewers to know that I think it’s an absolutely beautiful cover,” Colbert said. “We were asked by CBS no to indicate it. They thought it wouldn’t be a good idea for us to show it, and I don’t understand why.”
Despite the community’s request, the late-night presenter confirmed the magazine’s cover anyway.
“There’s the comforter, right there,” he said jokingly, adding, “I mean you look better in a jockstrap than I do.”
When asked why she believes the photo sparked outrage online, Stewart said: “Actually, it’s a little ironic because I feel like I’ve seen a lot of male pubic hair on the cover of things. I’ve seen a lot of palms on pants and unbuttoned ones…”
“I think there is an overt recognition of a female sexuality that has its own will in a way that is irritating to people who consider themselves sexist and homophobic,” she added.
Colbert then noted that “more revealing covers have definitely been seen in Rolling Stone or Illustrated sporting activities by the way,” to which Stewart responded, “It’s not even remotely specific.”
“I believe it also violates the public’s expectations of female sexuality compared to how you present it here,” Colbert said.
O Love is bleeding The star said she agreed with the comics, before adding: “Female sexuality shouldn’t really want something, no matter how accessible it is. And it seems like it’s projecting itself in a way that’s perhaps irritating. But fuck you!
Colbert shook her hand and began to continue. However, Stewart hilariously took a small jab at the haters. “But I never will!” she mentioned, persevering with her “fuck you” comment.
Colbert laughed, telling her, “I believe that’s why they’re mad at you!”
