The man who launched a knife attack in Rotterdam on Thursday night may have had “terrorist motives” killing one man and wounding another, according to Dutch prosecutors.
The 22-year-old from Amersfoot stabbed and injured his first victim in a car park under the Erasmus Bridge. He then stepped onto the pavement and killed another man. Bystanders and police stopped and arrested him.
They did not rule out the possibility of another reason.
The Public Prosecutor’s Office announced that he was being prosecuted for murder and attempted murder with terrorist motivation. Before the attack, the young man had shouted “Allahu Akbar” several times, which means “God is great” in Arabic.
However, prosecutors have not ruled out the possibility of another motive.
The suspect lived in Amersfoot, a town about 50 miles (80 kilometers) from Rotterdam. Eyewitnesses said he carried two large knives and chose his victims at random.
