Few things in this world have a more powerful connection to memory than food. The smell of a familiar dish or snack alone can bring you back to your childhood. For example: I don’t even have to taste what’s inside; just take a look at one Kellogg’s Fun Pack —the assortment of eight mini cereal boxes wrapped in plastic—and I’m back at my grandmother’s house, where she always had one on hand whenever my brother and I slept over.
Kellogg’s still makes Fun Pak, and it still has the same variety of cereals. (Apple Jacks, Frosted Flakes, Froot Loops, Cocoa Crispies, and Corn Pops, if you’re curious.) But many classic ’80s foods—some of the most popular and most advertised of the decade—have gone the way of the dodo bird. (Or maybe Fruit Stripe Zebra is the better metaphor here? RIP, Fruit Stripe Zebra.)
Sometimes popular items would disappear from supermarket shelves because they were inspired by a classic ’80s franchise — say Star Wars or Ghostbusters — that have started to lose their luster over the years. In other cases, the company that made them went out of business or was bought out by a rival corporation with a rival product. Or sometimes tastes have simply changed over time. Kids in the 21st century don’t necessarily want the same junk food as kids from decades ago. (I can attest to this myself; my kids barely bat an eyelid at those Fun Paks.)
Here are 20 foods from the ’80s that we wish were still made — even if we could only eat them one more time.
