Jon Stewart is leaving The Daily Show after his 23rd Emmy win?
It’s no surprise that this question was on reporters’ minds after last night’s ceremony.
Stewart and The Daily Show made history with their victory, but viewers had long expected the beloved comedian to step down again after the November election.
So while his return to the hosting chair has been a huge success, there are fears it may be short-lived.
Is Jon Stewart leaving The Daily Show?
In January, we learned that Stewart would be returning to The Daily Show before election season — but with a difference.
The 61-year-old comedy legend would host the show on Mondays only, with the program being open to other TDS personalities during the rest of the week.
Now, with a successful career and another Emmy for his trophy case, does Stewart still plan to close it after the election?
On Sunday, Variety asked Stewart directly if he still plans to leave the show for a second time.
Stewart plays it safe
“Well, my feeling is that this election is never going to end. So why would I end it? How could I leave? They won’t let me leave until the election, until we’re all ground into some kind of calcified nodule,” he replied.
“We’re looking forward to it being horrible.”
Yes, he kind of avoided giving a definitive answer, but it seems Stewart is having too much fun to stop now.
“I love the family of collaborators we’ve built over the years,” he added while speaking backstage at the Emmys.
“And you know, the good part about tonight is coming here and seeing everybody come together with them.”
Stewart shares the credit
From Stewart Daily Show contributors joined him on stage when the show won best talk series.
And he took the opportunity to introduce showrunner Jen Flanz to the audience.
“I love this iteration of The Daily Show”, commented Flanz backstage.
“I’m very happy to have spent so much time here Daily Show history, but especially through this moment when we have the opportunity to have so many different voices.”
Flanz has been with the show since 1998. And while she hasn’t commented on the future of TDS, it seems everyone involved is eager to maintain the current arrangement.
Variety reports that Comedy Central and Paramount Global appear to be happy with the “hybrid approach,” which will likely continue through 2025.
This is good for many reasons.
After all, it doesn’t matter what happens in novemberThere are sure to be wild moments ahead. And we’ll be happy to have Jon Stewart offering his unique style of commentary.
