A question to the European Commission on “the growing phenomenon of hate speech on social media”, tabled by ND MEP Eleonora Meleti.
“Hate speech, which aims only to diminish personality and “assassinate” characters through the use of vulgar and offensive characterisations, sexist insinuations and abusive terms, is unfortunately on the rise and constitutes a social pathology, although it is not consistent with the principles of European culture and education and with EU values,” according to the ND MEP.
Meleti, according to the relevant announcement, “condemns the racist, sexist and abusive verbal attacks that increasingly occur online with victims of all people, regardless of age, gender or any other characteristic” and calls on the European Commission “to take immediate action to combat the phenomenon and protect victims and their mental health from such attacks”.
It also, according to the relevant announcement, “calls on the European Commission to continue the 2021 initiative for a more inclusive and protective Europe by expanding the EU list of crimes to include hate speech and hate crimes.”
