Maryland’s highest court has upheld a ruling that Syed’s case should be remanded to the trial court to consider again whether his conviction should stand… essentially undoing the court’s 2022 decision that overturned the conviction and release the AS.

The new hearing has not yet been scheduled… but when it happens, the alleged victim’s family, Hae Min Leewill almost certainly be present in court.
As we mentioned, Syed’s murder conviction — popularized on the podcast “Serial” in 2014 — was overturned after prosecutors revealed there were two other possible suspects in the case.
Lee’s brother, Young Leewas upset with the court’s decision… and managed to have Syed’s murder conviction reinstated, claiming he and his family were not given enough notice about the hearing.
In a 4-3 decision, the state Supreme Court agreed that the Lees should have been notified … although the reinstated conviction does not necessarily mean Syed will return to prison.
He has been out since late 2022 and will reportedly remain out until the outcome of the next hearing — with the Maryland Supreme Court saying he can remain free in the meantime.
Erica Suter — Syed’s lawyer — says they can understand the Lee family’s frustration… adding that wrongful convictions affect the convicted, their families and the victim’s family as well.
