Veronica Fraley has a lot to celebrate. After the 24-year-old Olympian revealed she couldn’t pay her rent, Flavor Flavor It is Alexis Ohanian came together to help her.
“I’m competing in the Olympics TOMORROW and I can’t even pay the rent,” Fraley tweeted on Thursday. “My school only sent about 75% of my rent, while they pay football players (who have earned nothing) enough to buy new cars and houses.”
In fact, Fraley, a discus thrower, will compete in the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris on Aug. 2. The Paris Games mark Fraley’s first Olympics. The Clemson and Vanderbilt University graduate, who is currently pursuing a Master of Education in Human Development and Family Studies at the latter school, previously competed in two world championships.
In a follow-up tweetFraley added: “Thanks for the messages of support, but I want to clarify that my anger is not with the school itself, mainly with the rules that prevent me from earning the money I AM WORTH as a college athlete, such as NIL, which favors popularity over performance. That’s all I’m saying. Wish me luck tm!”
Ohanian wanted to do more than wish Fraley luck, however. The Reddit co-founder replied to Fraley’s tweet writing, “Let’s go! I’ll share with @flavorfav.”
Flav was on board with this plan, answering“I got you,,, text me and I’ll send you the payment TODAY so you don’t have to worry about it TOMORROW,,, and I’ll be rooting for you tomorrow, LET’S GO!!!”
Both men proved they had delivered on their promises by sharing screenshots after sending Fraley the rent money.
“A BIG THANK YOU TO YOU AND @FlavorFlav,” Fraley wrote in response to Ohanian’s tweet. “This makes all the difference in the WORLD and I look forward to representing Team USA well this week.”
Flav was clearly moved by the gratitude and took to X again to write, “This is the power of community,,, my girl @vmfraley had 7000 people see her tweet,, only 41 people ‘liked’ it,, only 5 people commented,, only 1 tagged me and @alexisohanian. Now that this tweet has been seen by 10 MILLION people,, her rent is paid for the year,, and the people have her back!”
Fraley isn’t the only athlete Flav has supported at this year’s Olympics. Flav, who is at the Games as the official man for the U.S. women’s water polo team, also GoFundMe promoted pages created by several athletes, including Fraley.
“That’s what I’ve been saying and promoting with water polo… I can’t fix everything by myself… but now I’m doing it,” he tweeted.
When ET spoke to Flav about the Olympics, he gushed“Words right now can’t even explain how incredible this is. I’m living a dream come true right now. I’ve always dreamed of being at the Olympics one day, watching it and seeing it in person. Right now God has given me the gift of being able to be here and see it.”
