The Greek Parliament was lit up tonight with the iconic sign “I DON’T FORGET” for the black anniversary of the Turkish invasion of Cyprus, as this year marks 50 years.
“We pay tribute to the brave Helladian and Cypriot warriors, dead, missing and alive, who, in tragically adverse circumstances, defended the independence, sovereignty, territorial integrity, but also the constitutional legitimacy of the Republic of Cyprus,” said the Speaker of the House of Parliament, Konstantinos Tasoulas, to a delegation from the Committee of the Occupied Communities of Cyprus, which he met in Parliament.
The history of the symbol
According to a relevant announcement by the Parliament, the symbolic sign with which the Chamber of Parliament was illuminated was created by the writer Nikos Dimos, on the morning of 14 August 1974, the day on which Cyprus was divided into two parts by the invasion of “Attila”, with 37% of its territories to this day remaining under Turkish occupation. “I DO NOT FORGET” painfully condenses the entire Cypriot tragedyhalf a century later and despite the fact that the martyred Megalonissos now belongs to the European Union. The iconic sign was printed on thousands of stickers, copies were sent to newspapers, the slogan “I DON’T FORGET” was translated into several languages and sent to many parts of the world where there were Greek students (Greeks and Cypriots). .
