Its iconic Eiffel Tower from France increases ticket prices by 20%, as reported by CNN affiliate BFMTV, to cover the costs of renovation work and financial losses during the coronavirus pandemic.
One adult ticket that includes the elevator ride to the top of the Paris landmark it will cost 35.30 euros from June 17th and then, from 29.40 euros, BFMTV reported. The same ticket for children aged 12 to 14 will cost €17.70 and the price for children aged four to 11 to reach the top of the tower will be €8.90.
“Significant revenue loss in 2020-2022”
The price increase was due, BFMTV reported, in part due to the “significant loss of revenue” caused by the “health crisis between 2020 and 2022”.
In 2020, fewer than 1.6 million people visited the Eiffel Tower, compared with nearly 6.2 million visitors the previous year, said the Sociéte d’Exploitation de la tour Eiffel (SETE), the monument’s operator. Fewer than 2.1 million people visited the tower the following year.
In both years, operating costs were about three times the monument’s total turnover, SETE said.
Renovation work is also behind the rising costs, including “lead prevention measures” related to painting the tower, BFMTV reported. The painting works are expected to last until 2027, and work is also planned on the elevators, which will lead to occasional closures.
