Jerry Seinfeld says “the far left and the PC crap” have had a negative impact on the world of comedy, especially television.
Seinfeld made the remarks while promoting his new Netflix comedy movie Thawed in an interview with The New Yorker. Asked if the current dark events have affected the world of comedy, he said nothing has because “people always need” humor. But then he went on to explain that the aforementioned forces, in Seinfeld’s opinion, were essentially bringing about the demise of TV comedy,
“Before, you would come home at the end of the day, most people would say, “Oh, Health is enabled. Oh, MASH is enabled. Oh, Mary Tyler Moore is enabled. Everyone in the family it’s on,” Seinfeld said. “You just hope, there will be some funny things we get to watch on TV tonight. Well, guess what – where is it? This is the result of the far left and the PC crap, and people who care so much about offending other people.”

He continued that people will still go see stand-up comedy because “we’re not policed by anyone. The public polices us. We know when we are off track. We know instantly and we adapt to it instantly.”
Seinfeld, which recently appeared in the series finale of Curb Your Enthusiasm alongside his longtime friend and collaborator Larry David, said the show was only allowed to continue on TV for as long as it lasted because it was “grandfathered in” thanks to David’s age. (“I don’t need to observe these rules, because I started before you made these rules,” Seinfeld added.)
Seinfeld underlined his point by stating that none of the four major broadcast networks ordered a new sitcom during the fall – although that may have as much to do with changes in the economics of network television and streaming (of which the Seinfeld film itself is part). ) as well as the nature of comedy in 2024.
Seinfeld’s feature film directorial debut, Thawedpremieres on Netflix on May 3rd. How do you think these new rules of comedy will affect the film?
Meanwhile, Seinfeld also appeared in a promotion for his film with documentary filmmaker Ken Burns, trying to convince him to make a film about from him film. Maybe he should have pitched him a documentary series on the history of comedy on television.
