His “horror” after the “terrorist attack” – as he described it – which took place near the Israeli consulate in Munich today, said Israeli President Isaac Herzog.
The incident occurred on the 52nd anniversary of the bloody hostage-taking of Israeli athletes by Palestinian gunmen during the 1972 Olympic Games held in the southern German city.
“Together we express our joint condemnation and horror at the terrorist attack this morning near the Israeli consulate in Munich,” Herzog said in a post on social media X, following a conversation he had with current German President Frank Walter Steinmeier.
German police have killed a man who opened fire near the Israeli consulate general in Munich. German authorities, for their part, have announced, taking a more cautious stance, that “the suspect’s motives” have not yet been clarified.
Interior Minister Nancy Feser spoke of “very serious actions” and assured that “the protection of Jewish and Israeli facilities is an absolute priority”.
