The new collective volume by Panagiotis E. Petrakis, Paraskevi V. Boufounou and Pantelis H. Kostis entitled “The Political Economy of Evaluation in Greece: Interdisciplinary Perspectives for an Inclusive and Forward-Looking Evaluation”, published by Palgrave Macmillan (ISBN 978-3-031-60720-2), seeks review the concept of evaluation to face the challenges of the 21st century and play an essential role in addressing the transformation of the global economy. It’s about a change of mind: When policymakers are looking for solutions, evaluation seeks to understand what are the right questions to ask in order to move beyond data models and ready-made worldviews. The concept of evaluating institutions and policies (with an emphasis on their economic character) has become a critical function for sustainable governance systems.
The book examines the relationships between politics, economics and evaluation. With a special focus on Greece, it looks at how assessments across sectors influence policymaking and explains what this means for sustainable development.
They contributed to the book 47 authors of 10 countries. Bringing interdisciplinary perspectives to the evaluation of economic policies for inclusive public policies and for the future, the 20 chapters of the book review the concept of evaluation in order to respond to contemporary economic challenges.
Nobel Prize-winning economist and professor at the London School of Economics and Political Science, Christoforos Pissarides, wrote the following about the book:
“This book contains a comprehensive and accessible discussion of the principles governing policy selection and the evaluation of past policies, which should be of value to policymakers and to all those interested in the role of policy in promoting social and financial well-being. The focus of several chapters is post-financial crisis Greece, but the book contains much more and should be equally useful to policymakers and others elsewhere in Europe and beyond.”
