Wednesday, July 31, today, and according to the calendar of the Orthodox Church, Saint Eudocimos the Just and Saint Joseph of Arimathea are honored.
On July 31, the memory of Saint Frederick is also honored by the Russian Orthodox Church. Although he is not included in the Greek Orthodox holiday calendar, his name is celebrated by many.
Saint Eudokimos
O Saint Eudokimos was born in Cappadocia during the time of Emperor Theophilus (829 – 842 AD). His parents, Vasilios and Evdokia, were wealthy and raised him according to the dictates of the Gospel.
His moral life and philanthropic action were appreciated by Emperor Theophilus, who appointed him military commander of Cappadocia first and then of the entire empire.
According to saint.gr, when he was 33 years old, Evdokimos suffered from a serious physical illness. When he gave up his spirit to the Lord, the Christian community was plunged into sadness and buried his honest body with reverence.
During the Anakomide, the Holy Relic of Saint Evdokimos was found “bright and blooming, graceful in every feature, with its clothes intact.”
Joseph of Arimathea
Joseph of Arimathea or Joseph of Arimathea was a member of the Great Council of Jerusalem, a wealthy and secret disciple of Jesus, who supposedly opposed his condemnation.
According to the Gospel according to Matthew (27,57-60), after the death of Jesus he asked Pontius Pilate for permission to remove the body of Jesus from the Cross, in order to prepare it for burial in the granted, of Joseph himself, carved tomb, probably of the family.
In fact, this permission was granted to him and with his helper Nicodemus “the Immaculate Body was laid in a well-washed and perfumed shroud in a new tomb”, until His resurrection. Joseph is mentioned by all four evangelists.
