Halsey is tired of mean fans.
On Tuesday, the “Lucky” singer took to her Tired and Lonely Muse Tumblr account to write a message to fans who have been flooding their timelines and comments with hate — instead of support.
“My own fans are, without a doubt, meaner to me than anyone else on the planet. I’m not speaking for all of you, of course. But it used to be just a minority who were horrible to me and now it seems like the majority only stick around to occasionally opine about how much they hate me or how awful I am,” the 29-year-old wrote. “It’s hard to want to engage in a space that is completely devoid of any kindness, sympathy, patience; or to be honest, human decency. Especially after years of hiding from interactions for fear of this EXACT thing happening. I don’t know, man. I almost lost my life. I’m not going to do anything that doesn’t make me happy anymore. I can’t spiritually afford that.”
Halsey continued, “When I got sick all I could think about was getting better so I could go back and be a part of THIS again but I don’t even know what *this* is anymore and I want to hide in a hole and regret ever going back.”
The “Without You” singer has not commented further. Halsey’s latest post comes after her latest song “Lucky” sparked conversation and controversy — and even a response from Britney Spears.
The single from her upcoming album — which samples Spears’ 2000 hit of the same name — documents her struggles with fame, being a mother and her battle with her recent illness. In the video, Halsey sports bright pink hair and channels Spears in her early 2000s era.
Following the single’s release, a now-deleted message appeared on Spears’ X account (formally known as Twitter) condemning the single’s release. However, Spears took to the account and clarified that Halsey had her full support, and that she did not post the message.
“Fake news!!! That wasn’t me on my phone!!! I love Halsey and that’s why I deleted it 🌹!!!,” Spears wrote on July 26th.
Halsey felt the love from the GRAMMY-winning pop star and reciprocated in her own tweet.
“And I love Britney!!!! I always have and always will,” the “Bad At Love” singer tweeted. “You were the first person who made me realize what it meant to feel inspired. And you continue to inspire me every day.”
Following the song’s release, Halsey took to Instagram to share its significance and the impact the creation of the video had on her.
“The Lucky music video is out and there are so many feelings going on here. It was really challenging to incorporate so many conflicting emotions into just a few minutes. This campaign has been fun because I WANT to have fun, but I made a lot of this art when I was hurting. I have so many people to thank for being a part of this monumental moment in my life,” she wrote. “From the bottom of my heart, thank you @giancarla.coppola , pascale and @simonrex415 and my entire team for making this happen. ⭐️”
In June, Halsey emotionally announced her return to music. The singer released her single, “The End,” in which she sings about finding love amid a health battle. While the “Eastside” singer didn’t share her exact diagnosis, she did tag the Lupus Research Alliance and the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society in her post.
Halsey also received support from the man she sings about, her boyfriend, Avan Jogiawho praised her in the comments, writing: “I love you and I’m so proud of you.”
