Pedro Sanchesappealed on Wednesday from Washington to the governments of Western countries not to apply “double standards” in relation to the war in the Gaza Strip.
“If we tell our people that we support Ukraine because we uphold international law, then we should do the same with regard to Gaza,” he said on the sidelines of a NATO summit, during which the military alliance’s leaders decided to further increase its military aid to Kiev.
For Spain’s socialist prime minister, there should be a “consistent political position” on this issue, “without applying double standards”.
“We must create the conditions for an immediate and urgent ceasefire,” he added, warning of the risk of escalation on the border between Israel and Lebanon.
Spain has become one of the most critical voices against Benjamin Netanyahu’s government in recent months. Along with Ireland and Norway, the Sanchez government recognized at the end of May, the State of Palestine, provoking the ire of the Israeli government.
