Hellboy got his first film in 2004 — before Iron Man, Doctor Strangeor Green Lanternor had their first films. A sequel came in 2008, and then a reboot came in 2019. All of these films had the general format of big blockbuster movies. But the Hellboy The comics, created by Mike Mignola, tend to be much darker and scarier, and much closer to horror stories than traditional superhero tales.
Apparently the new Hellboy movie will change that. Dubbed Hellboy: The Crooked Manis inspired by one of Mignola’s Hellboy series, and Mignola himself co-wrote the script. (At Comic-Con, he called it “the first real horror movie” in the franchise.) It was directed by Brian Taylor, director of the underrated Nicolas Cage film Mom and Dadand half of the Neveldine/Taylor duo that made Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance and the incredible hand crank movies. His Hellboy is played by Jack Kesy, from The tension It is Claws. He takes over the role from Ron Perlman and David Harbour.
The first trailer of The crooked man premiered during Comic-Con and definitely looks a lot darker (and also a lot smaller in scope) than the previous three Hellboy movies. Take a look for yourself below:
