As her beautiful story was turned into a Lifetime movie with Jana Kramer, Morgan Metzer remembers being tied up, suffocated and assaulted by a masked man who turned out to be her own ex-husband – whose behavior immediately after the attack aroused suspicions.
On New Year’s Day 2021, Georgia mother Morgan Metzer woke up to a masked man inside her bedroom, before being zip-tied, sexually assaulted and choked. It turned out that her attacker was her own ex-husband, from whom she had recently divorced… and now, her story is providing a new Life film.
Showing on Sunday night, Gaslit by My Husband: The Story of Morgan Metzer stars Jana Kramer It is Austin Nicols like Morgan and her ex, Rodney, who, in August 2021, finally admitted to 14 charges related to an assault on his ex-wife, including kidnapping, assault, threatening her with a weapon and leaving her tied up with self-made handcuffs.
Rodney pleaded responsible at the time and was sentenced to 70 years in prison, with the first 25 years served in prison and the remainder on probation. He is still currently behind bars at Augusta State Medical Prison in Grovetown, GA.
“Right after the divorce, he became a stalker very quickly,” Morgan said. The Solar in a new interview published Sunday ahead of the Lifetime premiere. “Just this bizarre feeling, after I checked him, I don’t even know how to clarify. Shortly after we signed the (divorce) paperwork, we exchanged children again every week. He would make strange and random comments when trying to get me back together, asking me out, I would say no.

“He kept trying all these little things to get me back. He thought he was going to win again, he kept buying me flowers, other things he should have done when we got married,” she stated. “He would lie… whenever I was around him, he would just look at me in a really bizarre way.”
On New Year’s Eve, she woke up as much as a person inside her room. The intruder used a tool to mask her voice and wore what Morgan described as “Batman” style masks to cover her face. He hit her with a gun, strangled her, tied her fingers behind her again and sexually assaulted her.
“When he spent half an hour beating me, tying me up, when he decided to strangle me, I didn’t really feel the rest,” she told The Solar. “I didn’t feel like I was being punched or hit with a gun because the adrenaline was high. I felt the strangulation and it was the worst feeling on this planet. I’m looking at him and I can’t see his eyes.
Then the intruder left, after telling her: “You’ll be good, but we can’t say that about your ex-husband. You’re really going to ignore him.’”
“That was after I said, ‘Wow, that’s him,’” Morgan recalled. “Why would someone randomly tell you that you will miss your husband?”

Minutes later, Rodney confirmed his home, saying someone informed him there had been a break-in at the house. Neither Morgan nor the responding officers believed him and began questioning his habits instantly. “There is no way in hell that someone will knock on your window and say their name and you will immediately come here because you are going to audition with her and she or he, for sure, with a pillowcase on their head by a person who is disguising their voice,” a detective will be seen asking Rodney on Morgan’s front porch that same night.
In response to DA, there was “substantial” evidence against Rodney, who had a gun in his home, as well as zippers that matched those used on Morgan. Surveillance footage also showed him leaving Lowe’s after purchasing the ties, despite telling authorities he didn’t even know what the ties were in interviews with police.
The footage also showed him returning to his home, before emerging again in different clothes moments after the attack. His phone and laptop also showed research on “how long before you starve to death, how to change the sound of your voice, and how long it takes to choke someone unconscious.”
At the time, assistant district attorney Rachel Ashe said, “This man is a master manipulator. In the days leading up to this attack, he falsified a cancer diagnosis in an attempt to gain sympathy from his ex-wife. When that didn’t work, he created a complicated plan that the investigators on this case and our office actually consider a plot to kill her and then himself. When he couldn’t follow through on that plan, he devised a new plan to rescue her.

Speaking to The Solar, Morgan said that after the attack, she “didn’t sleep at all” for months.
“I would sit in the corner of my son’s room and look at that door. Doors scare me now. If someone is standing in the middle of a door, it makes me feel really bad,” she said. “I’m working on it. I didn’t sleep for several months.”
As for why she’s speaking out and what she hopes people take away from the Lifetime movie, Morgan said she wishes the girls would stop being so “catty” and aggressive towards each other.
“I wish women would learn to communicate in a circle with people they trust and anyone can say, ‘That’s not normal, Morgan, for him to do that,’” she said, before adding, “That’s what In fact, I need it. And frankly, I wish his mom and dad would see it. His mother and father, however, do not believe he did it.”
She also advised TODAY she hopes people can start to recognize how “little red flags” can build up over time, before sharing her reaction to watching the film herself.
“I watched it and felt like it was anyone else’s story. And then every now and then, I might think, ‘Oh, this is about you,'” she told the outlet. “Of course the elements would make me a little unhappy. And then, at points, I would say, ‘I can’t believe I actually went through this. How did I get it? And that just made me assume that girl power was already highly effective.”
