Skaramangas Shipyards aims to regain a leading role in the Mediterranean, which under the new ownership of shipowner George Prokopiou is progressing step by step, to become a center of sustainable and green development and technological innovation. Its acquisition took place after an international tender, which was won by Milina Enterprises Company Limited, a company owned by George Prokopiou, with an offer of 37,316,041.88 euros, increased by 22% in relation to the initial price. A successful pre-contractual audit by the Court of Auditors followed and the yard was handed over to the new investor with the transfer of the property to Sociedade Imobiliária Pública.
Prokopiou also acquired control of the land, facilities and equipment belonging to Hellenic Shipyards SA, which is in liquidation, for 25,200,000 euros. The shipowner’s entry into the Skaramangas Shipyards was immediately marked by the full remuneration of staff, as well as the approval of an amendment in Parliament that regulated maintenance issues for the Navy’s submarines.
Development Plans
Prokopiou characterized the development of Skaramangas Shipyards as his personal commitment, highlighting that “the sea is the field of the Greeks”. The Greek shipowner, which has the country’s second largest fleet by tonnage – a total of 16.1 million DWT – and has 63 commercial ships under construction (tanks, bulk carriers and LNG carriers), is in no rush to implement its plan , as he first wants to “fix” a shipyard that had been practically abandoned for a decade.
