Brooklyn Nets pitcher Dorian Finney-Smith is opening up about her father’s return home after a nearly three-decade long prison sentence…counting TMZ Sports Pops is making up for lost time by spending time with his family!
Elbert Smith reunited with his son in December after he was paroled… following a second-degree murder conviction in the mid-90s. Smith, 52, got to see his NBA player son play as a professional for the first time … when he attended a home game at BK in April.
“It was exciting, man! I wish I could have played better in that game, but we got the win and he was just happy to be there,” the 30-year-old LAX forward joked.
FYI, Dorian scored just 2 points ahead of his father despite averaging almost 9 points and 5 rebounds per game this season.
We also asked Dorian what his father, sentenced to 44 years, has been up to now that he’s out.
“He is with his grandchildren. Trying to catch up with them,” DFS told us.
Of course, when you’ve been locked up since 1995, being free comes with some challenges… technology has advanced a lot since Elbert joined. We asked Dorian how his father is adapting.
“That’s where his grandchildren come in. That’s what they’re doing, teaching him about the iPhone, FaceTime, he doesn’t want any social media.”
Pops, however, loves YouTube, according to Dorian… and he’s been using the site (and it’s endless tutorials) to find out what he doesn’t know.
Although Elbert only attended one game this year, Dorian says we can expect to see a lot more of him in the future.
“You’ll be seeing a lot more of him next year.”
