Hilary Swank says all actors are faking it… so she’s in favor of non-trans actors playing trans characters and vice versa – at least, that’s what she’s saying it seems.
The two-time Oscar winner won her first in 2000 after playing a trans man Brandon Teena in the biopic “Boys Don’t Cry” and reflected on the role in an interview with London times.
When detailing his role in the film, Swank acknowledges that he wouldn’t accept the role today, saying that his role was a sign of the times and that adding a trans actor could really sink his teeth into Brandon’s role today.
But HS doesn’t leave her thoughts on the role at that… and her additional statement makes it seem like she’s totally fine with cisgender actors taking on transgender roles.
Swank says, “I also feel like actors are actors. We’re supposed to play different people, and I’d like to hope that trans people have the opportunity to play non-trans people too”… so it seems like she’s hoping for a one-way approach. Two-way – gender identity shouldn’t stop an actor from getting a job.
Hilary’s stance is not common in Hollywood… in 2021, Eddie Redmayne – who played a trans woman in “The Danish Girl” – said he regretted starring in the film, despite receiving an Oscar nomination for it .
AND, Scarlett Johansson give up of “Rub & Tug” after receiving criticism for agreeing to take on a transgender role.
But Hilary is firm on this…it’s more about the quality of the acting than the correct identity. There’s only one way to resolve this: vote below!
