The Indiana Fever reporter who was dragged into a bizarre conversation with Caitlin Clark on Wednesday is now apologizing for his actions…admitting he crossed the line with his behavior.
Gregg Doylejournalist for the Indianapolis Star, issued the mea culpa just hours after going viral for giving a heartfelt gesture to Clark and following up with some noteworthy comments during his introductory press conference.
Doyel first said in a post on his X page that he was “sincerely” sorry for the “stupid” encounter. He then posted a column on the Star website where he tried to explain his conduct.

Doyel said he likes to have awkward moments with the athletes he covers… “before asking bold questions.”
However, he realized that he only recently did this with male athletes – not female ones.
“I was just doing what I do, talking to another athlete, another personand I didn’t see the line – I didn’t even know there was a line nearby – until I crossed it,” he said.
“In my rush to be smart, familiar, and welcoming (or so I thought), I offended Caitlin and her family.”
Doyel then said what he did and told Clark it was simply “wrong, wrong, wrong.”
“I mean, it was just wrong,” he continued. “Caitlin Clark, I’m so sorry.”
For his part, after initially appearing uncomfortable with the situation, Clark answered Doyel’s questions – and continued his press conference without further fuss. She is yet to publicly comment on the incident and Doyel’s apology.
