Mercedes-Benz on Wednesday revealed an updated EQS that will hit showrooms later this year as a 2025 model.
O EQS arrived for the first time for the 2022 model year and Mercedes has added updates to the big electric hatchback in each subsequent year, although sales have still struggled. Mercedes sold just 6,688 examples in the US last year, or almost half the number of S-Classes sold.
For the EQS 2025, a larger 118 kWh battery was installed. It will provide more range than the current 108 kWh battery, although Mercedes has not provided any range estimates. The EPA’s highest estimate for the 2024 EQS is 352 miles.
Also helping to increase the range of the 2025 EQS is new regenerative braking software that Mercedes says allows more energy to be recovered. This is in addition to the efficiency boosters that have been added for 2024such as a heat pump and a disconnect feature for four-wheel-drive versions that turns four-wheel-drive mode into two-wheel-drive mode when the extra traction is not needed.

The 2025 EQS will be easy to spot thanks to a more traditional faux grille design, plus a Mercedes star hood ornament. The AMG Line front fascia is also included as standard.
Mercedes has also made efforts to increase luxury in the cabin. There are extra chrome accents and the comfortable back cushions have contrasting stitching and leather piping. The rear seats themselves have also become more comfortable thanks to additional foam padding in the backrests. Electronic adjustment allows the rear seats to recline from 27 to 36 degrees in some versions.
A more substantial upgrade to AQS is expected next year. Camouflaged prototypes were sighted, and appear to feature new headlights and new dashboard designs at both ends. Mechanical upgrades are rumored to include a more efficient cell design for the battery, new engine designs, and the addition of a two-speed transmission to aid high-speed cruising.
