Tori Spelling is sharing his side of the story. After news broke on Friday that the 50-year-old actress had asked for divorce her husband of 18 years, Dean McDermottSpelling opened up about the decision on her new podcast, orthographic erroron the weekend.
“I just filed for divorce. Wow, I just said the words I’ve been saying in my head for, like, 16 years. Wild,” an audibly emotional Spelling shared.
O 90210 star called her ex during the podcast recording to let him know that news of the filing had become public. And although McDermott’s side of the conversation was not heard, Spelling said McDermott was concerned first with the appearance of his application.
“I feel like I deserve to file first, then. You basically lay it all out with the Daily Mail“, she told her ex, referencing a recent interview. “You’ve said everything you’ve done to me over the years. So I think it would make perfect sense for me to file this away. Because these are things I would never have disclosed to anyone and you did.”
Despite the tension, Spelling ended the call by telling McDermott, “I love you.”
The mother of five admitted: “I’ve never felt so alone,” adding: “I don’t feel like I’m worth loving.”
She talked about her initial courtship with McDermott, calling it a “fairytale romance.”
“Dean and I had a fairytale romance, even though we were both married when we met — it’s not a fairytale,” Spelling admitted. “But we had other partners that we cheated on and left and then got together.”
She said that after they started having children “our relationship was never the same.”
“Everything became focused on the kids and I kind of left him in a way. And I understand. That doesn’t excuse his behavior and everything he did,” she added.
Noting that their marriage shouldn’t have lasted 18 years, Spelling remembers telling a friend that she would leave her ex as soon as her children could unbuckle their car seats, but then she continued to have more children.
But when the “final blow” came, it happened in June 2023 after a big fight between the couple.
Claiming that the now-sober McDermott “was drinking,” Spelling shared the comment her ex made that sent her over the edge.
“He said, ‘Ugh, I’m sick of this. I’ve been learning Tori Spelling’s shit for 18 years.’ And I lost control,” Spelling said.
Following this fight, McDermott posted an announcement ending her marriage to Spelling on Instagram. He later deleted the post.
On a November 2023 Interview as Daily MailMcDermott shared his account of the night, saying, “My worst memory with Tori is that last fight when I was drunk and angry. It was the night I raged against her and the kids and saw the light, the final flicker of the flame.” It went out in her eyes… I posted this because I was at my limit. I didn’t know what to do. I had burned everything again.
Afterwards, McDermott said he “took a few more pills and took six or seven Ambien in hopes of not waking up.”
“Thank God I did it. Thank God I did it,” he said. “Because I would have ruined many lives if I had died.”
The former couple share children Liam, 17, Stella, 15, Hattie, 12, Finn, 11, and Beau, 7. McDermott is also dad to Jack, 24, from a previous relationship.
Spelling filed for divorce last week. In the documents, obtained by ET, Spelling listed her and McDermott’s split as June 17, 2023 (the night of the fight) and notes that irreconcilable differences are the reason for the split. Spelling is requesting spousal support from McDermott and asking the court to terminate her ex-husband’s ability to receive financial support.
Earlier this month, a source told ET that Spelling and McDermott were “in a much better place” lately.
“Dean has been taking care of himself, which has made it easier for him and Tori to co-parent,” the source said. “Dean is more involved with his kids and they are all doing well and regrouping as a family.”
However, just a few weeks later, photos emerged of the pair having an emotional encounter in a warehouse. In photos obtained by ET, Spelling can be seen throwing a bag toward McDermott and crying in her car.
Romantically, both parties have moved on. Spelling is dating Ryan Cramer, whom she was stained came out in November, and McDermott is dating Lily Calo.
