Shakira is talking about the movie “Barbie” – saying its message of ultra-feminism and female empowerment is misguided… and comes at the expense of men.
The singer spoke with Fascination about the film… and she was brutally honest about how she and her children – two boys, specifically – felt about it… and despite the overwhelming praise the film received last year, Shakira says she and her brood were ‘ This did not impress.
Shakira says… “My kids absolutely hated it. They felt it was emasculating. And I agree, to a point.”
She continues… “I’m raising two boys. I want them to also feel powerful (while) respecting women. I like pop culture when it tries to empower women without robbing men of the ability to be men, to also protect and provide. “
Shakira adds: “I believe in giving women all the tools and the confidence that we can do anything without losing our essence, without losing our femininity. I think men have a purpose in society and women also have another purpose.”
Finally, she says… “We complement each other and this complement should not be lost.”
Definitely an interesting take from Shakira here — which seems to be echoing some conservative talking points that have been espoused about “Barbie” for several months now. Here, it seems that she herself is somewhat conservative… at least on this specific issue, anyway.
We’re sure this will cause a lot of conversation… Shakira is important and her opinion matters.
