Emily and her parents trip to Cameroon to meet Kobe’s family and learning about their culture took a wild turn on Sunday’s episode of 90 Day Fiance: Happily Ever After?, when Kobe revealed the fact that he and his family wanted him and Emily to get married in Cameroon in a traditional ceremony so that his father could recognize the marriage as legitimate. Kobe and Emily were already married in America.
This season of 90 Day Fiance: Happily Ever After?, Kobe is taking Emily, her kids, and her parents to Cameroon. It is the first time that Kobe has returned to his country since meeting Emily in Chinaand eventually get married, have children It is settling in Kansas with her, and the trip was emotional for him. On Sunday’s episode, Kobe broke down in tears when her parents and 10 siblings finally met Emily and her in-laws, while Emily and her parents I definitely experienced culture shock in Cameroon. Kobe’s father, Isadore, thanked him emotionally Emily’s father, David, for loving Kobe like he was one of their own and joked that he didn’t think Kobe would get a wife. Isadore then said that he wanted Emily and Kobe to get married in a traditional wedding in Cameroon in order to get the blessing of their ancestors. Emily and her parents were immediately shocked and worried, as they wouldn’t be in the country for long.
“Since we didn’t get married the traditional way in Cameroon, my father doesn’t fully see you as my wife,” Kobe told Emily. “I didn’t know my dad would, you know, reveal this. … We really need to make him happy.”
Later, Emily and her parents expressed their concerns.
“I’m worried because planning our wedding in America took so much time, effort and energy that I don’t know how I’m going to do it in another country and I only have two weeks to do it,” Emily said.
Kobe explained what happens at a traditional Cameroonian wedding, including that Emily and her family would have to prepare traditional dishes for the guests the night before. They would also receive a dowry for Emily, a tradition he called “door knocking.”
Emily’s mother told the cameras: “Kobe keeps saying, ‘It’s tradition, it’s tradition’ – and I understand that. I understand they’ve been doing this for hundreds of years, but I definitely have questions about the whole door-knocking situation. It seems to me that I am giving them my daughter in exchange for goods. Nothing about this feels right to me.
Kobe then said that they expected 100 guests to attend, which was a shocking number for Emily and her family.
“It looks like it’s going to be crazy,” commented David.
Not surprisingly, Emily was worried, even though Kobe said it would all be “fun.”
“I don’t know how to be a Cameroonian wife,” she observed. “Also, I don’t know how to cook any of their traditional foods, so I don’t know how I’m going to do that, but it’s really important for me to show the Kobe family that I want to be part of their culture. So I’m willing to try to prove my worth to the relationship.”
