Oroville, California, the officer who pursued the boy’s vehicle did not realize that an adult was not operating the getaway car. Only when the car came to a complete stop did he realize it was a child. ABC News 7 reports.
What happened?
The boy stopped the car at the intersection of Fourth and Grand. Consequently, the officer used his PA system to order the vehicle to move. The 9-year-old boy followed the command and exited onto Fourth Street. He entered the parking lot of a Valero gas station and then entered a dirt parking lot.
Then the boy accidentally backed into Oroville, California, Highway Patrol Officer Terry Dunn’s car.
He said he “(I noticed) a small coil inside the head – unusual.”
Dunn continued, “I got out of my patrol vehicle, made a traffic stop, and as I approached, I could see a child, who was a 9-year-old, putting his head out and saying, ‘I’m sorry, I was trying to get to school.’”
The little friend almost made it. His school was right next to where they were parked, so ABC News 7.
“At this point, we are trying to identify whether that was the school he actually attended. We contacted the principal, we contacted the parents and everyone showed up at the scene,” he said.
Police reaction to car chase
Dunn said the officers were in disbelief once they heard what had happened.
The officer stated that he was feeling “just in shock.”
“…Several other cops showed up too, and it was one of those ‘nobody really believed it’ things,” He explained.
The police officer added: “Then, several other officers showed up at the scene only to see, in fact, that it was a 9-year-old child driving the vehicle.”
Furthermore, Dunn stated: “HFortunately, many other people take this seriously and learn from it. So I hope this doesn’t happen again in the future. Maybe just talk to your kids about the dangers of driving a vehicle and what could happen.”
In the end, the young bull managed to get to school.
