Anthony Mackie has been a supporter of the Marvel Cinematic Universe since debuting as Sam Wilson/Falcon in 2014’s “Captain America: The Winter Soldier.” The actor’s tenure in the MCU has included the “Avengers” films and the Disney+ series “The Falcon and the Winter Soldier,” and now Mackie is taking on the mantle of Captain America in the upcoming film “Captain America: A Brave New World.”
When selling his latest “Twisted Steel” series in the UK, Mackie compared the project to his experience making Marvel films and told Radio Times that there was even more storytelling freedom available outside of the MCU.
“I would say the Marvel thing is totally different, just because it’s an area of managed entertainment. Like, there’s only so much you can do,” Mackie noted. “There’s a lot of creativity you can bring to the table, because Stan Lee gave us a lot of content. Whereas with this (‘Twisted Metal’), it was like, ‘There’s a man and a woman…go!’ So we were really able to build the world around it.”
Mackie agreed that a project like “Twisted Steel” has the freedom to introduce and eliminate characters at will, which is not something the Marvel Cinematic Universe can consider so easily.
“Precisely. And that’s the hardest thing about the Marvel universe. It’s like you really can’t step outside the lines of these comic books,” said the actor. “, after we released the Falcon, and the expansion of the Falcon into Captain America, all of that needed to match what Stan had already given us. Therefore, it is a juggling act that attracts attention to be part of this world. And that was more like, ‘Let’s just have fun and figure it out as we go.’”
“Captain America: A Brave New World” is directed by Julius Onah (“The Cloverfield Paradox,” “Luce”) and co-written by Malcolm Spellman, who was the creator of “The Falcon and the Winter Soldier.” The cast includes Harrison Ford in his MCU debut as Thaddeus “Thunderbolt” Ross, replacing the late William Damage. Ross is now the president of America in “Brave New World.” Liv Tyler and Tim Blake Nelson also star, reprising their roles as Betty Ross and Samuel Sterns from “The Unimaginable Hulk.” The supporting cast also includes Shira Haas and “Prime Gun: Maverick” actor Danny Ramirez.
In another conversation with Radio Times, Mackie lamented that “The Falcon and the Winter Soldier” did not have a second season. The show ended up being a limited series that followed Sam Wilson’s transformation from Falcon to Captain America and prepared the character to now lead “Captain America: Brave New World.”
“’The Falcon and (the) Winter Soldier’, I really loved making this gift. I was really excited to do a second season, just so Sebastian (Stan) and I can get a commission to stick around,” Mackie said. “Because it’s like me, him and Daniel Brühl. It’s like the right storm of happiness.”
“When they decided to come back to the movies (with me), it is what it is, but I don’t have my friends anymore, so that kind of diminishes a little bit,” he added.
“Captain America: A Brave New World” is ready to premiere in theaters on February 14, 2025 by Disney.
