Amy Robach has reason to raise a glass and celebrate – she had her long-awaited blood tests and doctors said she was in good health and remains cancer-free.
Robach and partner/co-host TJ Holmes shared the important update about the latest episode of its Amy and TJ podcastin which the couple opened up about the experience of going into the doctor’s office together, something she had avoided since February 2023.
“It was actually extremely quick and easy,” she said. “It’s so funny what you worry about and what you think about and then when it actually happens and happens, it’s so much easier than you expected. It’s the anticipation that’s the hardest part.”
Robach shared “it was amazing” having Holmes by his side, especially because “I always have a hard time going back to that building where I was first diagnosed.”
The old one Good Morning America host was diagnosed with stage 2 breast cancer after undergoing a routine live mammogram in 2013. Before her recent blood test, Robach shared earlier this month that she had last done this in August 2022. Holmes was shocked by this fact. And after begging on his podcast to make an appointment and get blood work done, Robach finally did. She scheduled the appointment and the results came out.
“I received the results a little while ago and everything is fine. Everything is fine!” she said. “And I think when I sent you the message, I sent you some glasses of champagne clinking, as a toast, because thank you for putting a little pressure on me to go into that office and be able to say, ‘OK, I took the blood test and now I’m all clear for a time.”
In fact, Robach said doctors told her she has now “graduated” and needs blood tests once a year.
“(But) the threat is always there and I will always delay a little because it is always scary. ‘What will this test show? What is this blood test going to do?’” she said on the podcast. “But when you do it and you’re lucky enough to get a good result, wow, that’s a huge relief.”
Robach shared that Holmes had a lot of questions for her doctor, given that he is less than two years into a relationship with someone who has had breast cancer. She felt his curiosity was “a very loving thing to do.” But Holmes said the whole conversation with the doctor “fucked him up” because the ordeal is so complex.
“Simply put, when you go for blood work, you’re waiting to see if everything’s OK or if it’s back,” Holmes said.
He added: “We are not going to waste a day.”
Robach also revealed that Holmes learned that the breast cancer she battled always has the potential to return, which highlights the importance of getting blood tests. And although she has since received approval from doctors, Robach understands that she will never be able to breathe a sigh of relief.
“I also want to point out that it is 100% a death sentence, but there are new advances being made every year and there is an incredibly advanced quality of life, but it is a completely different way of life,” she explained. “And you saw this through our dear, beautiful friend Morgan, where now you have a life of treatment always. Every two weeks, every three weeks you get infusions of chemotherapy or immunotherapy and your body is weakened and you have a different standard of living. So it’s a complete turnaround from the way many of us, most of us, live. So there is an intention behind every moment that you won’t necessarily have until you walk this path. way, and I hope no one has to do that.”
