Mercedes-Benz is testing prototypes of an electric compact sedan that will serve as its flagship Next-generation CLA-Class. Prototypes for a hybrid version are also out of testing.
The new design was presented last year by CLA Class Conceptand Mercedes confirmed the start of sales in 2025. The moment points to a likely arrival as a 2026 model in the USA
Another prototype has just been spotted and elements installed on the test vehicle indicate that it is likely an AMG-tuned variant.
Clearly visible are the large wheels that house a powerful set of brakes. The rotors, which appear to be drilled, almost fill the wheels. The rear also features a large section of camouflage, likely hiding an active rear wing. New details can also be seen, such as taillights that integrate Mercedes star logos, a design feature featured on the Concept CLA-Class.

For the interior, the concept featured a single panel running the entire length of the dashboard and integrating digital screens for the instrument panel, infotainment system and a third screen for the front passenger. The dashboard also integrated openings for the climate control system.
The redesigned CLA-Class, and other members of Mercedes’ next-generation compact family, will ride on a newly developed platform called MMA (Mercedes Modular Architecture), which supports hybrid and all-electric powertrains. The redesigned CLA Class will be the first model on the platform. The platform will eventually be used for all Mercedes models, including the C-Class segment. Separately, AMG is working on its own AMG.EA EV platform, which is expected to debut next year in a Successor to the 4-door GT coupe.
According to our photographer, the AMG-tuned CLA-Class prototype has all-wheel drive. During winter testing, all four wheels kicked up snow whenever the vehicle accelerated from a stop.
The redesigned CLA-Class will be part of a compact, compact lineup that Mercedes refers to as a luxury entrance (further above are Core Luxury and Top-End Luxury). Other models in the Entry Luxury group will include redesigned versions of the CLA-Class Shooting Brake, GLA-Class and GLB-Class, all of which will likely have their own AMG-tuned variants. A new generation of the A-Class hatchback it’s also rumored to be coming.
