CELEBRATION OF ASIAN CINEMA
Veteran Chinese language director Zhang Yimou will be presented with a lifetime achievement award at the next version of the Far East Film Festival in Udine, Italy (April 24-May 2). The lineup will include three of Zhang’s films: his 2023 political thriller “Underneath the Gentle” in the competition section; in addition to “To Dwell” and “Raise the Red Lantern” in its part of restored classics.
The entire competition lineup contains 74 films in total (47 contenders and 28 non-contenders) from 11 international locations. Events will kick off with a double bill of mainland Chinese blockbuster “YOLO” and Korean action comedy “Citizen of a Type.”
Other highlights include Indonesia’s “13 Bombs” Angga Dwimas Sasongko; Hong Kong’s “Golden Finger” Felix Chong; investigative journalism drama “In Broad Daylight”, from Hong Kong broadcaster Lawrence Kan; “The Emperor of Cinema” by Ning Hao; a ten-strong Japanese selection that includes “(Ab)normal Need” by Kishi Yoshiyuki, the crime thriller “Gold Boy” by Kaneko Shusuke, and the kidnapping drama “Lacking” by Yoshida Keisuke.
South Korea’s eleven competition titles include: political thriller and blockbuster “12.12: The Day”; the 2 components of the “Alienoid” fantasy of 2022 and 2024; “Exhuma,” an exorcism drama that is this year’s biggest box office draw, and action comedy “The Roundup: Punishment,” featuring the Korean-American star Dom Lee.
NEW NEW ZEALAND
The Whanau Marama: New Zealand World Film Competition, which already tours the entire country, will add exhibits in six extra areas. Part of the competition list will likely be offered in Hamilton, Napier, Nelson, New Plymouth, Masterton It is Tauranga in August and September. These are alongside previously announced seasons starting in July in Wellington, Auckland, Dunedin and Christchurch.
