Sophy – a renowned child and family psychiatrist – says that lots of communication with children, even about adult matters, is the best way to help them understand what’s going on… and listening too, as children will ask the questions what they want. I want and need answers.

Dr Sophy says royal couple need to be transparent with their children – 10-year-old George8 years Charlotteand a 5 year old child Louis – and address the physical changes Kate may go through early on, so little ones aren’t surprised by the things that can happen.
On the subject of talking about really difficult questions about the severity of the illness and how Kate feels all the while… Sophy advises William and Kate to leave the answers open-ended – not promising a miraculous recovery, while also trying not to alarm the children at the same time. He says it’s a fine line… that Will and Kate will have to walk together.
Because the young royals are all different ages, some may question whether providing them with varying levels of information is the right way to go… but Sophy says no. He thinks William and Kate should give everyone the same general information and let them process it as they need.
Of course, Prince William will also be dealing with his own emotions following his wife’s diagnosis… and Sophy thinks this could bring up old emotions and trauma regarding the death of another famous royal – his mother, Princess Diana. Sophy says Will needs to find balance to face his family during this storm.
Kate says she and her husband have already told their children what’s going on – and that it took her time out of the spotlight to do it properly and carefully.
It’s unclear how these conversations went, but Sophy’s advice is clear… lead with the truth.
