On Thursday, Warner Bros. released the first full trailer for the highly anticipated sequel to Beetle juice – the 1988 cult classic film by Tim Burton. The film, which takes place in the present, also presents The leftovers‘ Justin Theroux and hits theaters on September 6th.
In the newly released first look, Ortega stars as the daughter of Ryder’s character from the original film, Lydia Deetz. O Wednesday The actress, whose character is named Astrid Deetz, rides her bike through the quaint little town of Winter River, Connecticut, before the clip cuts to the four main human characters – played by O’Hara, Ryder, Ortega and Theroux – at a funeral for an unidentified character.
The solemn event could be for Charles Deetz, Lydia’s father and Delia’s (O’Hara) husband. As the four stand on a coffin being lowered into the ground, a group of choirboys sing a melodious cover of Harry Belafonte’s “Day-O,” a callback to the possession scene from the first film.
Just then, the trailer cuts once again to an investigative Astrid in the attic of her family’s home, stumbling upon a small figurine of her town, which seemingly frees Keaton’s titular character – destroying the miniature town like a blue-green light. it fractures the whole in half, to the despair of Ryder’s character.
After floating away from the miniature city, Keaton’s character finally makes his grand appearance, saying, “The juice is loose,” as Lydia looks on in horror and amazement.
The trailer arrives just one day after Warner Bros. photos shared for the first time of the Deetz family back for the sequel.
At the beginning of March, Keaton spoke to ET and said that while it may have taken more than 30 years to reunite them (and that he sometimes doubted it would happen), the cast and crew couldn’t be more excited about bringing their beloved characters back to the screen for another go. .
“It took a while to get there,” he shared. “I really didn’t think we would do this, and we didn’t want to do this, several times (in) the last few years, but it was more fun than the other.”
Keaton has also previously praised Ortega – a newcomer to the already established Beetle juice family – saying she effortlessly “slipped” into the role and the film.
“Oh man, she’s good, she just got it, you know? She’s got the tone. She showed up and immediately knew what the tone was and just showed up like she does every day. She’s really special,” the 72-year-old said. – said the old actor.
Ortega too recently spoke with ET about her time on the set of the sequel, which she called “some of the most fun I’ve ever had on a set.” She added: “Visually, so exciting. Everything was practical.”
“Everyone did an amazing job. I felt so lucky to be there, it was crazy… I can’t wait for people to see it,” Ortega said of the Burton-directed sequel.
Beetle juice opens in cinemas across the country on September 6th.
