Wade Allain-Marcus is teasing what fans can expect from his next Don’t tell mom that the nanny is dead remake.
On Wednesday, the Insecure actor spoke with ET’s Denny Directo since the premiere of Diarra From Detroit, sharing the inside scoop on the remake of the 1991 cult classic starring Cristina Applegate It is David Duchovny. The new film stars June Squibb, Nicole Richie It is Jermaine Fowler.
“I want fans to know that everyone who loves the original will really enjoy what we’ve done. It’s a love letter and a tribute to the OG version and we also put our own spin on it and made it feel fresh. and new and exciting,” said the actor and writer.
The new film – which opens in theaters on April 12 – centers on Tanya (Simone Joy Jones), who is left alone to care for her siblings after her mother leaves and leaves them with an elderly nanny. In the original, Applegate played Swell, the older brother left with his siblings and an evil babysitter who quickly dies.
Allain-Marcus says they kept the same core story and tried to create the narrative around a new family that he believes viewers will fall in love with just as quickly.
“You will fall in love with this family, this young black family,” Allain-Marcus said. “It’s a sibling love story. That’s how I see this movie and how we made it, so I’m excited for people to see it.”
Details of the remake were kept under wraps until last month, when the director released the trailer on social media and also announced the project’s release date.
“Vintage. April 12th. In theaters. In every city. I also didn’t know this was the remake I needed… But I knew,” he wrote in an Instagram post in February.
“This was my favorite movie growing up 😍😍😍,” he replied Joan, the Virgin star Gina Rodriguez.
“King Wade! I’m so proud of you! 🔥🔥🔥,” comedian Phoebe Robinson added.
“LFG!!!!!! 🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥 That GUY,” shared Allain-Marcus’ Insecure co-star Jay Ellis.
Regarding its presence in the Diarra From Detroit At the premiere, the filmmaker told ET that as a longtime fan of the show’s star and creator Diarra Kilpatrick, he felt the need to show up and show his support.
“Diarra is a dear friend,” he said. “(She is) an artist, an actress, a writer, a filmmaker that I have followed and known for a long time. And to see that and, you know, what she created is just – it’s a really wonderful thing to be a part of that.”
The show – which also stars Morris Chestnut and Phylicia Rashad – follows a divorcing teacher who refuses to believe she was rejected by a man she met on Tinder.
