From her last public appearance for Christmas 2023 to the hypothesis that even the photographic and video evidence of her well-being are not to be believed, here is a complete timeline of Kate Middleton’s absence from the Royal Household.
As time, weeks and now months pass since Kate Middleton’s last official public appearance, online conspiracy theories have become increasingly out of control. Absence really makes thoughts go to crazy and conspiratorial places.
Some of the wildest speculation is that Kate died early this year or late last year and the Palace is covering it up. There’s also the idea that Prince William is trying to gently hype the public about a new girl, a secret lover perhaps, leaving Kate in the background. Or how about this all simply being a diversion from the truth that it was King Charles III who died?

Nothing holds back a grand conspiracy idea, even when exhaustive evidence emerges to perhaps debunk these theories. Proof as official photos of King Charles carrying out his duties. Or photos and videos of Kate actually looking alive and effective.
In the case of the latter, armchair detectives speculate that the photos and video were doctored or that the Palace is using a lookalike.
December 2023
December 25th: Kate was in good spirits and good health in what would be her last public appearance to date, smiling and waving alongside her family for the annual Christmas Day church service at Sandringham. Kate was photographed alongside William and their children, as well as King Charles III and Queen Camilla as they walked to St Mary Magdalene’s Church near Sandringham House.
January 2024
January 16th: Kate was admitted to the London Clinic for what Kensington Palace described in an official statement as a “deliberate surgical procedure on her stomach.” The statement further noted that “based on current medical advice, she is unlikely to return to public duties before Easter,” which is Sunday, March 31.
January 17th: The statement released by Kensington Palace notes that Kate’s surgery was “profitable” and her condition is not cancerous. She was further informed that she would remain in hospital for approximately two weeks, after which she would return to her home to continue her recovery.
January 18: Prince William was seen leaving the London Clinic, where he presumably visited Kate during her recovery. He reportedly had a male passenger in the car with him, for Page six. Kensington Palace said William will suspend his duties for a short period to be with his wife.
January 29th: Kensington Palace announced that Kate has been discharged from hospital and is back in Windsor. “The Princess of Wales has returned home to Windsor to continue her recovery from surgery. She is making good progress,” the statement read. “The Prince and Princess would like to say a huge thank you to their entire group at the London Clinic, especially the dedicated nursing staff, for the care they provided.”

February 2024
February 5th: Buckingham Palace has announced that King Charles III has been diagnosed with “a type of cancer”, found during a routine prostate procedure, and is presenting “a list of standard treatments”. It was suggested that he “postpone public-facing tasks” in the meantime, continuing to “undertake state business and official documentation as standard.” Queen Camilla and Prince William are expected to step up and help fulfill these public roles.
February 27th: Prince William abruptly canceled his scheduled visit to the memorial service for his godfather, King Constantine II of Greece, at St. George’s Chapel in Windsor. The prince cited personal reasons for missing the event, which was also attended by other older members of the family, including Queen Camilla.
It was around this time that online speculation began to suggest that something more serious had happened to Kate and perhaps all was not as well as the royal family was reporting. The hypothesis only continued to grow in the following weeks, becoming a narrative in its own right.
March 2024
March 4: Kate was seen in a car being pushed by her mother Carole near Windsor Fortress for TMZ, marking his first public appearance since December. The image did little to dispel the hypothesis that something had happened to the princess, with some on social media speculating that the grainy image was hardly definitive proof – with some going so far as to suggest it was a body double.
March 10: In the most controversial moment since Kate’s last official look, the princess shared a family photo for Mother’s Day in the UK, which was immediately ripped up. After publishing the image, the Associated Press even published a rare “death finding” because it allegedly did not meet their requirements. Getty also took the photo.

The AP cited obvious image manipulation on Princess Charlotte’s right hand, but online sleuths took things much further, finding several instances of obvious image manipulation throughout the officially released image. Based at the palace, William took the image at his country home in Windsor.
March 11: A day or so later, after the authenticity of her Mother’s Day photo was questioned, a message in Kate’s name was posted on X/Twitter, with the princess taking responsibility for the discovered photo manipulations.
“Like many novice photographers, I sometimes experiment with improvements,” the message says. “I want to express my apologies for any confusion the family photograph we shared yesterday caused.”

Information from the sky dug into the image’s metadata and discovered that it was saved in Photoshop on an Apple MacBook, once on Friday night and again on Saturday morning, before it was released. TMZ identified five notable situations that he believes have been changed, noting “it’s just a handful,” with others noting more.
Queen Camilla and Prince William continued to confront King Charles on public occasions, most notably at the United Kingdom’s Commonwealth Day celebrations. “Having recently celebrated my seventy-fifth birthday, it warms my heart to reflect on how relentless the Commonwealth has been throughout my life – a valuable source of strength, inspiration and joy,” said the King in a message delivered at the ceremony. “Over the past few weeks, I have been deeply moved by your wonderfully kind and thoughtful needs for my health, and in return, I can only continue to serve you, to the best of my ability, throughout the Commonwealth. ”

March 16th: Educated eyewitnesses The Solar who noticed Kate and William at the Windsor Farm Store, a mile from their home at Adelaide Cottage in Windsor. Viewers said the princess looked “absolutely content, relaxed and healthy.” The outlet also reported that the couple saw their children “participate in sporting activities” that morning.
March 18th: TMZ shared a video of Kate and William’s shopping trip the previous weekend, confirming eyewitness stories. In the video, the couple is smiling and looks good. Additionally, the outlet reported that they “investigated the metadata” and confirmed that the video was filmed on Saturday near the royal’s home in Windsor.
March 19th: With the persistence of online speculation now trying to put this new video to rest, saying that it’s not actually Kate in it, TMZ systematically pressed against the most prolific arguments, such as the existence of Christmas lights in the image and an obvious maximum disparity. Even Kate’s best-known lookalike, Heidi Agan, is convinced she’s the real deal in the video, so TMZ.

After stories in Russia declared that King Charles III had died, Buckingham Palace issued a statement denying the hypothesis and reporting that the monarch is alive. “We are completely pleased to confirm that the King continues with official and private business,” the Palace told the news agency TASS in an advertisement, for AND! Information. Photographs of the king’s meeting with Korean War veterans further confirmed that he was well and carrying out his duties, as reported by TMZ.
Based on The mirror, a London Clinic employee attempted to take a look at Kate’s medical information but was intercepted. The media outlet reports that an internal investigation is underway and the Palace was aware of it.
What comes next
There are mixed stories about when Kate will be able to return to public duties. On the one hand, she could follow the doctor’s recommendation and return to the family’s traditional Easter walk to church. There are, however, also chances that it could wait until children return to high school after April 17th.
In any case, it is important to note that his absence from the public eye since his surgery continues to be consistent with what was first announced by the Palace in January. As they recognized then, the doctors suggested that she not return to public duties before Easter, which only happens on March 31st. In other words, she appears to be just following her doctors’ orders.
It’s also unclear when Charles will return to public duties, although there are at least official photos confirming that he’s alive and well — hopefully putting at least some of the royal rumors to rest. In the meantime, Queen Camilla and Prince William continue to clash in his place.
TMZ will take a deep dive into the insane levels of hypotheticals and conspiracy theories surrounding Kate’s absence from social media in a new special.
