Writer, director and producer Walter Hill will receive the 2024 Laurel Award for Screenwriting Achievement from the Writers Guild of America West.
According to the guild, the award is given to members who have “exceeded film writing and made outstanding contributions to the screenwriting career.” Some of Hill’s writing and co-writing credits include “The Getaway,” “48 Hours,” “Final Man Standing” and “Lifeless For A Greenback.”
“Walter Hill’s influence on our industry is clear,” said WGAW President Meredith Stiehm. “His distinctive style influenced and educated generations of screenwriters who adopted him. He has had a lifelong and renowned career, and the Guild is honored to present him with the Display Laurel Award.
In the early 1970s, Hill began his writing career with “Hickey and Boggs,” “The Getaway,” “The Waterproof Coat” and “The Drowning Pool.” He first stepped into the director’s chair with the 1975 Despair-era film “Exhausting Times.” He later co-wrote and directed “The Warriors” in 1979, which developed a cult following. Hill co-produced “Alien” and co-wrote “Aliens” and “Alien 3.”
Hill also explored the Western style, starting with the Cannes selection “The Long Riders,” which he wrote and directed. He later directed “Geronimo” and served as the author and director of “Wild Invoice.”
Hill’s extra writing credits include his directing projects “Streets of Fire,” “The Driver,” “Red Warmth” and “The Task.”
Among other accolades, Hill received the Cartier Glory to the Filmmaker Award at the 2022 Venice International Film Festival for his film “Dead for a Dollar.”
